The first thing that you have to do as an engineer is to measure your value in terms of time. As you have spent nearly 20 years getting where you are now, you need to make sure that you use your time in the best way possible. Every second you waste could be a second that you use to hone your skills even further. However, that doesn’t mean that you should multitask several difficult things. Find a way to allot most of your time to tasks that reap the most benefit.
You need to understand that the days of learning from books have passed, and you have to do work from your hand from now on. Most engineering courses teach basic skills to the students, but most universities don’t focus on the practical part. You have to keep everything that you have learned during your degree in mind, or else you are going to have a very hard time in the field. Refreshing your memory before doing your job will give you a head start.
As most engineering projects will require you to work in difficult places or put your life in danger, you need to make sure that you have all the needed safety equipment to protect yourself. For example, a civil engineer might have to work on bridges or dangerous sites and hence should protect himself. You are also responsible for all the employees under your care. Last but not least, while confidence might be good for you, overconfidence can work against you. If your subordinates or employees think that you are arrogant or cocky, it can work against you, and they will lose their trust in you. Be confident in your decision-making skills and take care of everything who is working under you.
