1. Casablanca

It is a tale of two lovers, a former resistance fighter and a married woman, who cannot escape their pasts. 

The movie premiered in 1942 and was named as one of the best movies of all time by the American Film Institute.

2. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

In this classic from 1975, Jack Nicholson stars as R.P McMurphy, an inmate at a mental hospital who will stir up trouble among the other patients and employees. 

The movie won numerous awards including 4 Oscars including Best Actor for Nicholson, Best Supporting Actress for Louise Fletcher (who played Nurse Ratched) and Best Picture.

3. Full Metal Jacket

This 1987 war movie directed by Stanley Kubrick stars Matthew Modine as Private Joker, Adam Baldwin as Animal Mother and R. Lee Ermey as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. It is an adaptation of the novel 

The Short-Timers by Gustav Hasford. The movie follows two Marine privates throughout their time in Marine Corps’ boot camp at Parris Island and then into the bloody streets of Hue during the Tet Offensive, where they experience first hand the horror of war.

4. Barfly

Barfly is a 1987 drama directed by Barbet Schroeder and written by Charles Bukowski (more famously known for his novels).

It stars Mickey Rourke as Henry Chinaski, a down-and-out writer, who takes refuge in the dingy, low life dives of Los Angeles. 

Henry hooks up with Wanda (Faye Dunaway), an alcoholic barmaid who frequently slips into the dark hole of drug addiction.

5. No Country for Old Men

This Oscar winner for Best Picture in 2007 is directed by the Coen brothers and written by Cormac McCarthy (author of All The Pretty Horses). 

It stars Josh Brolin (who later starred in another Coen bros movie, True Grit), Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh, a merciless killer on the hunt for drugs and money.

6. The Shining

Directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on the Stephen King book of the same name, this 1980 psychological horror is just creepy enough to make your skin crawl. 

Jack Nicholson plays Jack Torrance, a writer who moves his family to an isolated hotel in Colorado for the winter where everything goes crazy. Scary stuff!

7. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

This is a classic buddy movie starring Paul Newman as Butch Cassidy and Robert Redford as his partner in crime, the Sundance Kid. 

It follows the bank robbing duo as they try to stay one step ahead of the law and evade capture by getting Butch’s girlfriend, Etta Place out of town. The movie is a bestselling soundtrack and won four Oscars in 1969.

8. Secretariat

This movie is pretty recent, coming out in 2010, but it is still worth watching. It tells the story of the horse Secretariat who won the Triple Crown in 1973. 

Starring Diane Lane and John Malkovich, this Disney flick shows how much love, commitment and dedication played a role in making this record-breaking horse a winner.

9. The Hunt for Red October

In this 1990 political thriller, Sean Connery stars as Captain Marko Ramius, a Soviet submarine commander who successfully steals a cutting edge Russian submarine, the Red October. 

Unsure whether he is trying to defect or launch a nuclear attack on the U.S., Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin), a CIA analyst teams up with a naval captain played by Scott Glenn to find out what Ramius’s true motives are. The movie won two Oscars in 1991 for Best Sound and Best Effects Editing.

10. Cool Hand Luke

Cool Hand Luke is a 1967 drama set in a no-rules Southern prison. It stars Paul Newman as Luke, an indomitable man who bucks the system and causes trouble for the guards. 

The movie won three Oscars including Best Actor for Newman and Best Supporting Actor for George Kennedy who played Dragline.

11. Zombieland

This 2009 comedy horror stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Emma Stone as they struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic America after their beloved home city of Columbus, Ohio is completely overrun by zombies.
