Does Private investigator Really Live up to the Hype?

Private investigators have worked their way into our everyday vocabulary and vernacular. They’ve even made headlines with scandals involving bribery, extortion, and espionage in the public eye. But what exactly is a private investigator honorary law degree abbreviated? What do they actually do? And are they as good as they seem or are they just as bad as Hollywood makes them out to be?

Today we are going to take a look at whether or not private investigators live up to the hype and whether you should even care about them at all.

1. What’s the deal with private investigators

Private investigators, for the most part, are like any other job. They have a client that wants something done and they do whatever it takes to get that job done. The difference is that their work is not in the public purview. They aren’t out there solving crimes and catching people who’ve committed heinous acts against innocent people like you saw on CSI or Hawaii Five-O . Many cases they work on are classified as civil cases. This means that it’s a situation where money may change hands for someone to stop doing something or to do something, or money may change hands because of a situation but it isn’t necessarily a crime involved. In this regard, private investigators are a lot like lawyers who work outside the courtroom.

As long as you’re not committing a crime or violating people’s rights, the police will let you do whatever you want to get your job done. You can knock on their doors, intimidate them into telling you what you need to know and any other shenanigans that come to mind. As long as it’s not breaking the law or hurting someone else, they’re your personal goon squad and nobody will stop you.

2. What exactly do they do?

The job of a private investigator is pretty simple on the surface level. They get a lead, they follow it up and they submit a report to their client. But something that gets overlooked when we think about private investigators are all the steps that come before this. The part that never gets televised or written into a crime novel. This is the part of the job where the private investigator has to talk to their client in order to figure out what it is they want, gather evidence, do background checks on possible witnesses, plan how exactly they will go about doing said job and collect any necessary tools for the job at hand. Again, this isn’t really glamorous work but it’s something you have to do if you want your final product to be as good as you can make it.

3. Are they worth it?

How much should you be paying for the services of a private investigator or any type of investigator at all? In truth, neither you nor your investigator can answer this question. It depends on what exactly it is that they’re doing and how much time they’ve invested in getting that information to you. If you’re trying to find out if your husband is cheating on you, that’s something that can take a lot of information gathering because there are a lot of different ways to go about doing so. They’re going to have to talk to his family, friends, coworkers and anyone else he might know. They may have to dig through emails or text messages. This could be something that takes a few weeks of work which is going to cost you more money than if they just went out and got the information right away.

Other things are based on an hourly rate. If it’s something simple then they’ll probably be able to do it in a time frame that doesn’t cost you very much money at all. Other things like installing cameras and listening devices can be done fairly quickly but is just as subjective as the first case we mentioned.

4. Do it yourself or hire one?

This is a question that we could talk about for days. There are a lot of factors to consider when you’re trying to decide whether or not to hire a private investigator. The first one is what exactly it is that you need done. There’s more than one way to do most of the things that private investigators do, but some of them are more efficient and effective at doing their job so you may have to be a little bit smarter about how you go about doing it.

Another question is how much time do you have to get this done? You should probably budget for how long it will take them to get the job done because your best chance at getting what you need done is by spending some money upfront. If you want your investigator to find out exactly what kind of person your husband is, it might be better for them to talk with his coworkers and meet with his family rather than just relying on a few off the cuff remarks he might have made online or in an email.
