Implementing safety protocols in workover operations

Pre-Job Planning and Risk Assessment

Conduct a thorough JSA (Job Safety Analysis) to identify potential hazards and develop mitigation strategies. Evaluate risks associated with the workover rigs operations and implement control measures. For this, you need to identify all tasks involved in the operation, determine the resources required, including equipment and personnel.

Risk assessment, a critical part of pre-job planning, involves identifying, evaluating, and mitigating threats. As per the guidelines by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the risk assessment process in workover operations should be thorough and systematic. This involves identifying potential hazards, assessing the risks associated with these hazards, and then determining suitable measures to eliminate or control these risks. Effective risk assessment can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents, protecting both personnel and equipment.

Training and Competency for Workover Operations

Provide comprehensive training to all personnel involved in workover operations, including hazard recognition, emergency response, and specific operational procedures. Also, ensure personnel have the necessary certifications for their roles and regularly assess the competency of personnel to perform their tasks safely.

Create training modules tailored to the specific needs of workover operations and the identified gaps. Ensure the training content complies with relevant regulatory and industry standards (e.g., OSHA, API) and combine classroom-based theoretical training with hands-on practical training. Use AI-driven virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) simulations to train personnel on equipment use and safety procedures.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Identify and provide the appropriate PPE for each task, such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and flame-resistant clothing. Train personnel on the correct use, maintenance, and storage of PPE. Conduct regular inspections to ensure PPE is in good condition and replaced as necessary.

Workover operations require a wide range of PPE, depending on the specific tasks at hand and the potential hazards involved. Basic equipment like helmets, goggles, and gloves are essential for protecting against physical hazards. More specialized equipment like respiratory protection and chemical protective clothing are used to protect against respiratory hazards and chemical exposures, respectively. Fall protection equipment such as harnesses and lanyards are also crucial in high-elevation work areas.

Equipment and Tools Safety

Regularly inspect and maintain all equipment and tools to ensure they are in safe working condition. Develop and implement SOPs (Safe Operating Procedures) for the use of all equipment and tools. Implement LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedures to ensure equipment is properly shut off and not started up again until the work is completed.

Focus on well control, chemical handling and safety. Ensure BOPs (Blowout Preventers) are properly installed, maintained, and tested. Maintain and provide access to MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) for all chemicals used in workover operations. In this way, the specialists can analyze historical data from equipment sensors to predict when a piece of equipment is likely to fail.

Environmental Protection & Emergency Response Planning

Implement proper waste management practices to handle and dispose of waste materials safely. Use spill prevention measures, such as containment berms and drip pans, to minimize environmental impact. Regularly monitor environmental conditions to ensure compliance with regulations and minimize impact.

Develop and implement an ERP (Emergency Response Plan) that outlines procedures for various emergency scenarios. Perform regular safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance with safety protocols and identify areas for improvement.

For that, cooperate with UPET, leader in construction of mobile drilling rigs in Romania and the region. You’ll benefit by service, expertise and training in mobile workover rigs, including technical revisions, repairs and insurance with spare parts.
