This is the same way that all dogs, cats, and other animals are bred in captivity. Most Pet Stores do not seem to realize this, which results in lost sales, bad customer service and low net profits. 1. The first thing you need to learn is how to breed animals. 

You may think that it’s very easy, simply just find a male dog and female dog you are interested in and breed them. However, this is much more complicated than it sounds.

Pet stores usually find the most “attractive” of breeds for sale. They don’t spend the time to know who or what type of animals to breed, which results in lower profits, poor customer service and a loss of sales. This means that you will be taking the jobs of these people, which is what makes this type of business so profitable.

2. Breeding is a science.

If you want to be successful at breeding, you will have to learn the science behind it. Every breed has different genes that need to be matched and blended correctly in order to achieve the desired results. Some people think that it’s easy because they work with animals every day, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Your success as a breeder will depend on how much time and study you put into it, so give yourself enough time before releasing your first litter of puppies or kittens for sale .

3. Buyer Beware!

If you aren’t sure what the selling price of your animals will be, do your research first. This is because many people will buy animals that are undervalued, and the end result is they are stuck with a pet they can’t sell, or a pet that is not healthy due to bad genetic traits. Unless you have done all of your research before breeding, don’t take the risk of selling undervalued pets.

4. Do Your Research Before Breeding!

You can put a lot of time and effort into breeding the perfect dog or cat, but if you don’t know what you are doing, you will end up with an undesirable animal that no one wants.

5. Always Make Sure Your Animals Are Healthy Before Selling Them.

This is another reason why so many people give up their pets to shelters. It’s very common for breeders to breed dogs and cats with known genetic defects because they are more “attractive” than other animals that do not have these genetic defects. The only problem with this is that there is no resale value in these types of animals.

6. Take the Responsibility of Proofreading the Breeding Records.

No matter how careful and experienced you are, it’s a good idea to check on your breeding records. Most breeders can tell you exactly what they had planned to breed, but if someone knows your pedigree, they could easily make money off of it by selling your animals’ offspring to unknowing customers. 

7. Don’t Overlook Characteristics.

Many people think that they can just walk into Pet Stores and buy whatever animal they want, but this isn’t true. Most Pet Store Staff members won’t let you bring in a purebred puppy or kitten without making sure you have all of the proper paperwork, as well as a completed “Puppy/Kitten Registration Form” and the appropriate vaccinations completed before the animal gets brought into the store. 

8. Always Follow the Rules.

This might seem obvious, but you would be surprised at how many pet stores break the law. These rules include dealing with animals before they are seven days old, not being able to sell more than three pets in one week, and not selling diseased animals. If you want to be successful at selling your animals, it’s important that you follow all of these rules. If you get caught breaking any of them, this will greatly decrease your sales and your profit margin.
