Pros and Cons of Foldable Smartphones

Smartphones with foldable screens are the next big revolution in the smartphone market. With the launch of Samsung Galaxy Fold, Huawei Mate x, and Moto Razr, foldable smartphones are the next big thing in 2020. They have not become a standard yet and they are not that common till now. Before the launch of these phones, Samsung had to postpone its commercial launch due to some technical difficulties.

Foldable screen was a vision and a dream for a long time. Off lately that vision turned into a concept and finally that concept has become a reality and available for all. Every new invention comes with their own advantages and disadvantages. Similarly, these foldable screens also have their own pros and cons.

Following are the advantages of foldable screen smartphones:

Powerful performance

Foldable phones have more space in them. Actually they have twice the space as compared to a normal smartphone. More space means it can be equipped with higher performance components. For example, galaxy fold comes with dual batteries, six cameras and best in class processors and it’s backed up by a Samsung protection plan as it is super expensive.

Flexibility

As the name suggests, foldable smartphones can be folded to a wallet-sized smartphone or open it up to a full-sized tablet. Flexibility is the main feature and benefit of these devices. It’s like carrying a full-sized tablet in your pocket. By just opening one fold you can transform your regular phone into a full-sized tablet.

Convenience

You can use it as a phone, tablet and a laptop all in one. Now while traveling for work you don’t need to carry a laptop, tablet and mobile phone with you as this can be very inconvenient. With a foldable device, you can handle multiple tasks at the same time. That bigger screen you can handle calls, messages, and work.

Get access to a wider and longer screen

Foldable screen phones come with a bunch of extra features. The main feature is multiple displays. A smaller screen when folded and a full-sized screen when unfolded. For regular calling and texting, you can use the smaller display. And the larger full-sized display can be used to watch movies, play games, multitasking and also for your official work. The larger display gives an amazing experience for watching movies and playing games.

Excellent camera

Foldable smartphones are equipped with multiple high megapixel front and rear cameras. This is possible as there is more space available on the device. Due to multiple screens, the rear camera can also be used to click high-resolution selfies.

Following are the disadvantages of foldable smartphones:

Extremely expensive

These foldable smartphones are extremely expensive which makes it out of reach for many. The starting price of a foldable device is above one lakh and goes up to 2 lakhs.

The market for these phones is quite small due to its high cost. At such a price a cell phone insurance is a must.  `

Heavy and bulky

Even though it fits in the pocket, the foldable design makes it bulky and heavy. Due to the complex design of the device, it weighs twice the weight of a regular smartphone. This bulky design and heavyweights sometimes makes it difficult to carry the phone. It will be difficult to fit the phone in tight pockets as it is quite thick.

Hinges are prone to defects overtime

These foldable phones rely on hinges for smooth folding and opening of the screen. Those hinges are where the main mechanism of the foldable screen lies. With continuous use and opening-closing of the display can lead to wear and tear in the hinges which might lead to issues.

Prone to defects

As it is a new development in the smartphone industry, it needs much more improvements and advancements. As a first of its kind product, it is prone to defects and glitches which will be resolved in the future models.

There are always two sides to the same coin. That’s the case with these new foldable screens. They have their own pros and cons associated with them. You need to be sure about your needs and make the decision accordingly. Technological advancements are never-ending and new developments like this will come and go. All you need to do is look at the pros and cons of these devices and decide whether it is a worthy product to spend your hard-earned money on.
