The Piece of Literature Advice That’s Seared Into My Memory

I was walking through the mall, past all of the stores that were out of my budget. The sun was shining down brightly. This is a kids’ game,  I told myself. I tried to make myself shake it off and go back to work, but that nagging feeling wouldn’t relent. Finally, I acknowledged its presence and turned around to find the girl behind me in line for an ice cream shop at school with her mom.

Let me tell you what she said: “sometimes people don’t want you because they want someone different from you with gigaboo meaning.

1. Always remember that. It’s okay if you’re not like everybody else, and it’s okay if you don’t do the same things as everyone else.

2. Live your life for yourself, and stay true to that voice inside of you.”

She could tell I was upset, so she went on: “You know, eventually some people will come along who will love you for who you are. Even if they have to dig deep to find out.”

3. To anyone who’s feeling sad or scared or trying to fit in: Please believe her.

I walked back towards the mall with a renewed sense of confidence and a spring in my step.

I exhaled deeply, took some more steps and then another deep breath.

4. Your friends don’t call you to tell you that they love you. You have to realize it and accept it by yourself.

5. “You don’t have to be perfect in this world so long as you’re brave enough to be imperfect.” ~ Dr. Seuss

6. “If you tell people about your dreams, people think a dream is something that can happen only in dreams.” ~ Dr. Seuss

The kid in the Ice Cream Shop was exactly right: You have control over what other people think about you . . . not them . . . YOU.

7. There are going to be people that you want to like you, but they don’t. And there are going to be people that you don’t want to like you, but they do. That’s life!

8. You’ll always regret the chances you didn’t take more than the ones you did take, so just go for it! Even if it comes out badly, at least you tried…

9. If someone makes fun of me, I pretend that I’m part of their tribe and I bow down before them and say “Thank You” as if I appreciate their words of wisdom in my presence! It angers them so much!! It’s great!!

10. I realized that some people seem happy, but they’re not.

11. I realized that people can test you and see how you react to their challenge, and that’s all there is to it . . .”The greater your ability to handle the situation the more they will respect you.” ~ ~~~*~*~~~

12. If you need things in life to be different than they are right now, change them yourself!

13. “If a problem comes up in your life and you don’t know how to solve it, just SMASH IT WITH A MELON!!!” ~Dr. Seuss

14. Sometimes you just have to be rude and be told that you were rude so that you can realize that other people are also rude and don’t care, and try again.

15. If I had to choose between not caring or being thought of a jerk, I’d rather be thought of as a jerk than not being thought of at all!

16. You shouldn’t have to explain yourself to people that you don’t like. And if they’re talking about you behind your back, they shouldn’t have the right to say anything at all!!

17. “And remember this: If a person’s sad because they lost their phone, there’s no reason for everyone else around them to feel sorry for them.” ~ Dr. Seuss

18. “If people don’t like you, try to learn about them. If you do, the first thing that pops into your head when you see them is, “Now I know why those people don’t like me.” ~ Dr. Seuss

19. “I didn’t say stop loving everyone that treats you badly . . . . I only said stop loving everyone that doesn’t treat you well.” ~ Dr. Seuss

20. The more times that someone tells you they love and care about you, the more likely it’s true! Make a note to count how many times it comes out of their mouths!

21. “If you don’t like me, sorry. That’s your own problem. I got problems of my own to deal with.” ~ Dr. Seuss

22. “Don’t worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you’ll have to ram them down people’s throats.” ~ Howard Aiken

23. Having a lot of good and smart friends makes you look better and smarter too! Be smart and be around smart people!

24. If someone pretends not to notice that you’re around, it’s ok because they’re either stupid or nasty. Either way, their loss!

Aaron Finch
