Top 7 Common Prejudices About Marketing :

1. Marketing is too boring to study –

Most people think marketing is boring and are turned off by the term. They are of the opinion that marketing is something you do when you don’t have anything better to do, or that it would be such a waste of time if they studied it.

This is a common misconception. Marketing is something that everyone can benefit from. It involves researching topics, writing reports and presentations, being creative and more. More importantly, it’s a valuable skill that can help you earn the money you need to live.

2. Marketing is just about promoting your product –

While marketing does involve promoting your products or services, it should not be limited to this purpose alone. Many people believe that marketing means creating ‘product copy’ for your clients or customers so they can easily understand what you have to offer them and what benefits they will get from buying from you. This is not the case. Marketing can be used to help everybody including yourself, your clients and your employees to understand why they need what you have to offer and how they can benefit from it.

3. Marketing is all about making sales –

Marketing is important because it plays a part in the overall sales picture. The sales process begins with building belief in the product or service before offering it to potential customers or clients. It involves building relationships with them and creating trust so that they can get their business done. There are many other activities that go on behind the scenes of marketing, but not all of them involve making sales.

4. Marketing requires a certain set of skills –

Many people believe that marketers need to have certain skills and possess certain characteristics to be successful in the field of marketing. This is not true. It’s true that marketers do need the right skill set and experience, but it does not mean that you cannot be a marketer if you lack these qualities or skills.

In fact, it means that you will have to work extra hard to learn them. The good thing is that there are many sources online and offline on how to do everything from sales and promotions to marketing research and analysis. Take advantage of these resources and learn as much as you can so you can perfect your marketing strategy over time.

5. Marketing is all about the ‘fancy’ stuff –

Many people have this misconception that marketing is all about the ‘fancy’ stuff, like going to conventions and screaming out slogans to get attention. The reality is that marketing can be as simple as wearing a certain color or tying your shoelaces in a certain way so that people notice you.

In fact, there are many situations where you can integrate your marketing techniques into everyday activities without spending much time or money at all. It all depends on how creative you are. As long as it’s something worth noticing, it’s worth doing.

6. Marketing is used by established businesses –

Many people assume that only big companies use marketing. This is not true at all. Small businesses and entrepreneurs use marketing too. The thing is that they do it differently than the big companies because they have smaller budgets and less resources.

If you are a small business or an entrepreneur, you should not let this discourage you from using marketing to your benefit. There are numerous ways of using marketing to get your name out there, both online as well as offline. You will have to experiment with a few different strategies and see what works for you before deciding on one in particular that suits your needs best.

7. Marketing is a ‘get rich quick’ scheme –

Many people believe that marketing is just a way for you to get rich quickly, whether it’s through selling other people’s products or services or selling your own. People assume this because of the way many businesses and entrepreneurs advertise their product. Because these businesses look like they can give you something for nothing, many people think they are doing something illegal or ‘fishy’. In reality, they are doing nothing wrong and are simply sharing the good news with others who might benefit from it.
