If you were motivated by mastery? If you were motivated by relationships and purpose? Understand why you’re unmotivated and how motivations can impact your life before trying to find a solution for it.

There are four different forms of motivation that each one could use its own technique to staying motivated: intrinsic, extrinsic, behavioral rewards, and creating meaning. In this blog post we’ll cover each one in greater detail!

1: Intrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic motivation is when your goal or end result is intrinsically satisfying within itself. This can be seen in people who enjoy various sports activities such as running or martial arts out of pure enjoyment from trying to improve their abilities and becoming better competitors.

People who are intrinsically motivated are often very invested in their work and motivated to complete the work well. This involves setting goals that they find personally satisfying, such as running a marathon or creating a really cool website.

2: Extrinsic Motivation

Extrinsic motivation is when your goal or end result is based on getting something else in return. For example, you might eat healthy because you need to look good for a date or perform well on an exam to get a better mark.

Just like intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation can vary in terms of how strong it is for you. Some people find themselves more motivated by rewards, while others prefer focusing on the activity itself with the potential rewards being secondary.

3: Behavioral Rewards

Behavioral rewards are when seeing results from a specific behavior may trigger a desirable response from another person or group. For instance, you might eat more junk food to fit in with your friends, or drink more alcohol to make yourself feel good about yourself. In other words, behavioral rewards affect the immediate feelings and emotions surrounding the behavior itself.

4: Creating Meaning

Creating meaning is when your goal or end result has so much value that it itself becomes the main driver of motivation. For example, when you see someone who inspires you and tries their best to make something happen in their life; you want to be that person and want what they have achieved. In this case, intrinsic motivation becomes the main driver.

Final Thoughts:

Which form of motivation is stronger for you? The truth is that there is no right or wrong answer. Understanding what motivates you in the long-term will help you get a better perspective on what activities you should be focusing your time and energy toward.
