Why Are Students So Obsessed With Medical School

Medical school has always been one of the most sought-after degrees in the United States; this is because it offers prestige and financial stability that are often absent from other professions. Ranked at No. 10 on The Princeton Review’s 2013 “Best Undergraduate Business Programs,” medical schools like University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University and Duke University offer top-notch educational resources and admission standards that are hard to beat.

However, there are definite drawbacks to being a doctor: the 24/7 work hours alone give new doctors little time for themselves or their families, while a significant number of students have gone so far as to stop taking care of their own health due to excessive workloads and sleepless nights.

Studying medicine is a difficult and unhealthy way of obtaining wealth in the United States; however, it is so much more than that. Medical students have taken on debt, suffered physical ill health and sacrificed their social lives in order to earn the American Dream. With all of these sacrifices, it is likely that every student has a different reason for choosing medicine as their career.  Byars health clinic is a good example of how these issues are addressed.

Reasons Why Are Students So Obsessed With Medical School :

1. Financial Stability

There are many reasons why a student would choose to go to medical school, but most of them can be narrowed down to financial security. In the United States, health care costs are rising exponentially every year, and there just aren’t enough doctors to serve growing patient populations. As this issue becomes more prominent, doctors are being asked to work more hours for a lower pay and with fewer resources. With that in mind, it is no wonder that some students will do anything they can to get into medical school and become a doctor.

2. Prestige

For many students, the prestige that comes with being a doctor can’t be matched. By the time they are done with medical school, they will have the respect of their peers, they will be able to afford large pieces of land and they will have a huge influence on their small communities. Many people may see this as a downside, but it is also something that motivates many people to go into medical school.

3. Money

Even though medical school is usually not very lucrative in the beginning and requires several years for most students to pay off their loans, it still has some advantages. After four years (plus a few more for residency) of working long hours at a low paying job, most doctors are still better off than they would be if they decided to enter any other profession.

4. Working With People Who Are Similar To You

After being in the same classroom for four straight years, it is easy to feel like you know everyone who is a student in your class. Even when you learn about someone’s history, it doesn’t really matter because all of your classmates had the same history before getting in medical school and many of them will have the same ones after getting out. This can make it easier for students to concentrate on their studies, as they are less likely to be distracted by negative emotions like envy or hatred.

5. A Career That Can Last For Decades

While it may be hard to work as a doctor for more than a few years, this is not usually the case. The reason for this is simple: many doctors will enjoy their work so much that they will want to stay in medicine for as long as possible. As a result, some of them will remain licensed even after retirement and continue practicing medicine.

This is something that many people can relate to because it usually takes between 20 and 30 years of hard work before someone can retire without having to worry about money or other financial burdens.

6. An Excuse To Help Others

While some people may argue that this should not be a reason to go into medical school, the truth is that it is often much harder to help than it seems. The reason for this is because there are not enough doctors in the world, and many people need medical care that they cannot afford or they do not have access to. While many professions can be used as a means of helping others, medicine offers protection and legal immunity; these are two things that other careers do not offer.

7. The Ability To Be Self-Sufficient

Many people will tell you that the best part about being a doctor is that you do not have to rely on anyone else for anything. While this may be true, it is also true that many people do things in medicine because they do not want to rely on anyone else for help. This is especially true for people who have been through a divorce or two, as many of them can’t stand the idea of having their spouse control their finances and dictate what actions they are allowed to take.
