Moving can be both an exciting and overwhelming process. And by overwhelming, I don’t mean just physically and emotionally, but financially as well.
If you don’t think it through carefully, expenses can add up very quickly. And the last thing you want when moving is to go over your set budget.
Instead of stressing out, be clear with yourself from the beginning and allocate a strict budget. Here is what you can do to cut your moving costs.
Do Everything Yourself
Hiring movers is great, but let’s be honest — with all the added and sometimes hidden costs of moving, it can get pricey fast. If saving money is your highest priority, then DIY packing and moving is most likely your best bet.
It’s always great to have some extra help, so call your friends to help you. If you have to move a lot of bulky furniture, rent a truck that you or your friends can drive.
Get Crafty With Packing Supplies
Want to save money on moving costs and the planet? Use repurposed packing supplies and utilize items you already have at home.
Stores like The Home Depot or Walmart are great places to look for cardboard. Make sure to go just before closing — the employees will probably even be happy to get rid of unnecessary boxes.
You can also use laundry bins, suitcases (great for heavier things like books,) and duffel bags.
Instead of bubble wrap, opt for towel sheets and pillows to protect fragile items.
Move at the Right Time
If you’re not in a hurry, you may want to consider waiting for the right season before you relocate.
Winter months are typically cheaper, especially if you’re looking to hire professional movers. Apartment rent tends to be more affordable as well during winter.
Spring and summer are the busiest times to move, so you may want to consider postponing your plans if you can.
Sell and Donate Items
Moving is a perfect time to get rid of any unnecessary clutter. Sort out your stuff and find items that are in good enough shape to sell — Facebook Marketplace and Craiglist are excellent spots for start. Just make sure to be safe and take receipts if you donate.
It doesn’t hurt to bring in a little extra cash; plus, you will have less stuff to move and worry about. Double win!
Prepare Food
Food is usually one of those “hidden” costs when it comes to moving. Who’s going to think about food and cooking when they’re in the middle of moving? Usually, it all falls on the delivery person.
To avoid spending too much money on take-out and deliveries, food prep before the moving begins. You can freeze a couple of meals for a few days before and after the relocation. Also, pack food items that are nonperishable, such as canned goods, peanut butter, chips, etc.
Moving on a Budget
Once the moving process begins, it can be hard to think about saving money, as all you want to do is make it easier for yourself. That’s why it’s crucial to make a plan and set saving money as your priority.
With different tips on how to cut costs, it’s entirely possible to move on a budget. It can also be stress-free — especially when you check your credit card balance afterward!
