Blogging is what we do best when we’re at our best, where we can share our thoughts with the world with no reservations or fear of judgment or repercussions.
Blogging is our journey through life, with all its highs and lows, i’m bringing blogging back because it’s time for us to take charge of our lives again by becoming the authors of our own lives.
It’s time for us to get back in touch with the things that made us who we are, which includes sharing pieces of ourselves on a grand scale so that you too know exactly who you’re collaborating with.
And when it’s back, that means that when I’m doing it well, then maybe you want to hear from me again. Maybe you wanted to read about my experience in Saudi Arabia , or how I got my job in Dubai .
Or maybe you’ve been sitting on your hands for ten years because you didn’t know how to start blogging again, so here’s a beginner’s guide, just for you.
Here are some tips to upgrade your blogging–
1. Write more consistently.
It’s easy to set aside time for blogging once or twice a week, but then it becomes more of a chore than an enjoyable pastime.
Consider setting aside time every day for writing your thoughts down. It’s not always about writing long posts- sometimes short thoughts are the most impactful ones anyways!
If the words are flowing out of you naturally, do yourself a favor and don’t stop just because nothing is really coming to mind.
Write those words down anyways, and don’t use the lack of a good post idea as an excuse to give up. This is what will make your posts meaningful, as you’ll be able to use these pieces as a way to reflect on whatever you’re going through.
2. Respect your audience and community.
If you want them to respect you and your work, show them that you respect them. If they’re frustrated and upset about something, share their frustration and outrage before offering any advice or wisdom- it will let them know that you understand where they’re coming from.
If they’re excited about something, share their excitement before you give your own thoughts. Even if you don’t quite agree with them, show them that you respect their position enough to consider it and react to it positively.
Wishing only the best for your readers will show them how much you value their opinions and your relationship- if they believe in what you believe in, then there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be friends with them! Be kind. Be honest.
And always remember that some people won’t like what you have to say, but some will appreciate it more than anything else they’ve ever read before.
3. Always write for yourself first, then for an audience second.
I’m not saying don’t write for an audience, because you should absolutely want them to read what you have to say. But, writing for yourself first will help you be more authentic. If you write for an audience, your work will be less personal- because who are they?
If you write to yourself first then it becomes more of a reflection of the things that are happening in your life at that point in time. When something happens in your life, there is almost always a feeling behind it, whether it’s good or bad.
Writing down those feelings will help you see them clearly and identify them when they happen again in the future. Don’t forget- when you write, you are not the only one who is reading it.
You are writing for yourself, but that doesn’t mean that others don’t matter in the process.
4. If you want more readers, become a better writer.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to learn how to write well or get an English degree (although these things will help!). Just continue to be yourself and remember all of the words you want to share with the world- nothing else matters if no one is getting your thoughts.
If you aren’t getting many views on your blog or not many people are reading it regularly, then just keep on writing. You won’t meet anyone who can read your thoughts if you don’t put them out there, and that’s what matters most.
5. Write about what you know.
You don’t have to write about something that you haven’t experienced, just because a lot of other bloggers haven’t either. But if you are someone who’s always passionate about an aspect of life, then it’s okay to talk about that aspect.
Sometimes you want something to spark your interest, and that’s okay too. Even if you don’t have full control over the writing process, remember that this is how it started- all of us got our first blogs because we had enough words in our head to start posting them out there.
