Everyone has heard the saying that you should never meet your heroes. The idea is that they will never live up to your expectations and can be disappointing in many ways. It is said that everyone’s dreams are created using this phrase as the foundation, to put their own spin on who they want to be their hero. The first business venture presented in this article, as I have said before, was produced by a person who was not allowed to meet his own hero because he lost out to the person after winning a bidding war.

1. eBay

eBay is the largest auction site in the world with over 68 billion dollars of sales in 2017. They were started by Pierre Omidyar, who was an Iranian-American computer scientist and French national while living in France. He started the company while he was a graduate student in computer science at the University of California, Berkeley. 

He created an auction website which was called AuctionWeb back in 1995. The site became extremely successful, but Omidyar thought he could create a better version of it so he ended up selling his site to eBay Inc for 1.5 million dollars and became the president of paypal.

2. Airbnb

Airbnb is one of the most popular vacation rental websites with over 200 million users worldwide and has more than 2 million places listed for rent. It was founded by Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia who were designers from America. They began their first website because they couldn’t afford their rent while they were creating a new product.

 They had an apartment in San Francisco and needed to pay their rent so they rented out 3 airbeds to conference attendees at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. They started this business with no money and 13 dollars in cash, but eventually grew into one of the most successful technology companies even though Chesky and Gebbia were not allowed to meet their own hero. This is why Airbnb is “your space, anywhere”.

3. Salesforce

Salesforce was founded by Marc Benioff who later became the president, chairman, and CEO of the company. It is a cloud computing company that provides CRM software and other apps to companies. The highest value tech company in the world, it is also ranked as the second most innovative company by Forbes Magazine. 

Benioff started this company after his own software called “Sales 1” was stolen from him. He filed to get the software back in court and won, but passed on a chance to work with his hero Steve Jobs because he felt that they were at different levels in their careers while Benioff was still just a student.

4. Microsoft

Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates who was one of the two founders when it formed. He is still the second richest person in the world behind Jeff Bezos. He is an American business magnate, philanthropist, and investor. He is best known for being the co-founder of Microsoft Corporation. 

Gates had to create his own software after founding the company with Paul Allen because he wasn’t able to meet his hero, Steve Jobs. It was a natural step because of Gates’ focus on personal computers while he was attending Harvard University where they created their own operating system while Gates was thought to have been stealing Jobs’ ideas that were stolen from Xerox Parc.

5. Gimbels Department Store

Gimbels was a department store chain founded by Isidor Straus with the name of Gimbels, Incorporated in 1901. It was the largest department store company in the world. The company had over 65 locations in America and 2,700 employees. In 1969, it sold its assets that bought it was purchased by Macy’s, but the last Gimbels store still lives on as Macy’s Radio City Music Hall. They were quite successful with their products but suffered a dramatic decline when they closed their doors for good.

6. YouTube

YouTube is one of the most popular video streaming sites in the world. It was created by three former PayPal employees, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim in February 2005. The co-founder Jawed Karim went by the name of Justin on YouTube and he started this website from a fun project between his friends. 

He was studying history at Stanford University at the time when he came up with this idea with his friends. In 2006, Google bought it for 1.65 billion dollars in stock and since then it has grown into a household name across the world with over one billion users every day watching billions of hours worth of content uploaded by users every day on the site alone.
