1.Why do you need backlinks?

So why do you need backlinks to your website in the first place? Well, without a few powerful links pointing to your website, it can be incredibly difficult for a new visitor to find and navigate your site. Thus, it is important for site owners whose websites are tiny and/or new to make sure they gain backlinks from authoritative sites.

This is because more reputable sites will help build up the authority of any newly created page on the web. Thus, your page will be more easily found all over the web.

The more backlinks you have, the higher a site is ranked in Google. The more a site is ranked, the higher it will appear on searches for the most relevant keywords.

Let’s say that your website sells women’s clothing and accessories. If you want to rank high on Google for terms like “women’s handbags” or “bags for her”, then you will need to make sure that you have at least a few high quality backlinks from reputable sources! In this case, sites like About Women or About Handbags would be perfect places to gain these types of links.

2.How do you build backlinks?

There are three main types of backlinks that you can gain: internal, reciprocal and natural. Internal links can help your site rank highly for highly relevant terms while reciprocal links help your site to appear on the pages of other websites. Let’s briefly discuss each:

Internal Links: This type of link helps to direct a visitor from one page to another. It does not necessarily go to a third party website; but rather, it directly points from your site to other websites that the visitor may want to visit.

Reciprocal Links: These types of links help present multiple websites in a single place. If you have three different websites that you want to create on the same topic, it may be helpful to link them all together. The idea here is that the search engines will see all of your sites linked together and will give them credit for promoting related information on one another.

They are usually found through bringing content from other sites into your own, or by linking to them directly. For example, if you have a site that offers recipes for raspberry pie then you can link back to some recipes at FoodandHealth.com. This is a reciprocal link, simply because you are linking to the site from your own.

Natural Links: You can gain natural links by simply making your content similar to that of others. For example, if you have a recipe site and want to rank well on Google for terms like “apple pie” or “recipe for apple pie”, then you will need to make sure that you create very similar recipes that visitors can choose from.

3.Which links to seek out?

So, how can a new site build a large number of backlinks? You can gain many internal and reciprocal links in places that are “authoritative” in the world of websites. These sites will typically be verified by Google and will generally contain lots of great content. Furthermore, they may be linked to by other websites that you want to link to!

Here are some good starting points:

About.com: This is generally one of the top online resource sites about a particular topic. It’s full of quality content and is the perfect place for you to start building your reputation in your niche.

Wikipedia: Wikipedia is the perfect place for you to gain lots of backlinks from. The site uses a wiki format that allows people to easily add and edit articles on the site.

Thus, you can contact a Wikipedia editor, then give them a few reasons why your site would be a great addition to their list of “External Links”. Then you can link your website from the place where they mention your topic.
